Meet betticlay

Vintage photograph of young betticlay, surface pattern designer on farmhouse steps, holding a cat.

Growing up on a Minnesota farm, I spent endless hours walking through the countryside, charmed by wild flowers and butterflies. I loved dancing and singing for the hayloft audience of kittens. Always, always there was making: daily baking, sewing, learning to knit and crochet. Each summer’s highlight was entering my 4-H projects at the county fair, hoping for purple ribbons on my handiwork.

Fast forward past years of teaching music, earning graduate degrees, mothering a loving family, and a 20-year career as an instructional designer in banking. Now retired and a grandmother, I’ve come full circle, back to a life of simplicity and always, always making. My years of skill and experience joyfully come together in designing surface patterns inspired by life in the heartland.
